Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I've been in private practice as a psychotherapist since 1987. For four years before that I worked at a couple of outpatient agencies.
What is your primary product or service?
Change. A shift in awareness and consciousness. People who come to me feel stuck is some way - I help them get unstuck. I have a variety of means to do this - from therapeutic conversations to CBT, EMDR or even hypnosis.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Growing up in the 1960s I became exposed to the idealism of Martin Luther King and JFK; there was also a shift in consciousness. And I've always been somebody people can talk to. Looking back, I've been the confidante of people since early childhood.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
First of all, there is plenty of work to go around, so I don't think of other therapists as competitors but as colleagues. Having said that, you would be hard pressed to find someone with more training or experience than I have. Three years of post graduate studies in Family & Couples work via Family Therapy Associates in Ann Arbor. Two levels of credentialing in EMDR, taught by Francine Shapiro. Federal Certified Trainer in MET/CBT in intervening with teens and young adults with substance use issues. And most recently 120 hours of training in Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I've been in the same office in East Lansing for many years - 790 W. Lake Lansing Road, at the intersection of Harrison and W. Lake Lansing.
Provide detailed directions to your location
790 W. Lake Lansing Rd. Suite #300. At the intersection of Harrison and W. Lake Lansing. Harrison (which borders the west side of MSU) dead ends into an office park. We are in the first building you come to in that office park.
What type of payments do you accept?
Many people who see me are reimbursed by their own insurance companies, but I am only directly billing McLaren at this time. Most people (80%) pay out of pocket. I accept credit cards, checks or cash. My fee is $125 for the therapy hour (50-55 minutes).
Which areas do you service?
Mostly local, Lansing, East Lansing and the outlying areas. I've had some clients commute over a hundred miles for sessions.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I'm the sole proprietor. If you call me and leave a message I'll be the one who calls you back.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday through Thursday are the days I meet with clients. It varies from day to day. I offer a.m. hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, evening hours Monday and Thursday. Friday I write. My speaking schedule is flexible.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
I'm happiest when people find relief and make the changes that they want to make. I'm glad to be a part of that process.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
The past does not equal the future.
